Unit 10: Day 2 - Jacob 7

Jacob's encounter with Sherem reminds me of mission very much.  I served in the inner city of New York (i.e. Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island).  Being in a mission as dense as I was, people interaction is constant.  The moment you step out of your apartment, you will encounter people rushing off to work.  The moment you step on the subway, you will be in a midst of a crowd.  Street contacting was our number one method in finding people and needless to say, being dressed up in white shirt with a black tag representing the Church certainly attracts a lot of attentions; for both good and for bad.  During those "bad" situations, defend the faith and taking "fire" on from criticism is very common, much like what Jacob has taken from Sherem.  Even though while you are still in school, I think you can identify the "Sherems" in your life.  They can be your friends, your classmate or maybe even adults.  I think Jacob in chapter 7:5-14 provided a very good "game plan" for us to follow.

Here is a brief summary of what Jacob suggested:
  • Remembering past experiences that had strengthened his faith.
  • He relied on guidance and strength from the Holy Ghost.
  • He testified of the scriptures and words of prophets.
  • He shared the testimony he had received through the Holy Ghost.
  • He left the outcome in God’s hands.
I think I have a missionary experience attached to each of those bullet points above but it may be too lengthy for me to share here.  But I must testify to you that this "game plan" really does work.  The question is what are you doing today in preparation when "Sherem" comes to shaken your faith?  Let's not forget, "Sherem" is no dummy; he is learned" (Jacob 7:4).  If there is a take away from this lesson, please ask yourself these questions?
  • Can you think of an experience where you remembering feeling the Spirit the strongest?  Temple trip?  Girls camp? Certain conversation you had with your parents?  Certain blessings?
  • Are you reading your scriptures regularly?  From both modern day and ancient prophets?
  • Do you have a testimony and faith in the Holy Ghost?  Even to a point of receiving strength from the Holy Ghost that he would literally put words in your mouth?  If so great but if not, how are you going to attain that?  Maybe pray for it specifically?
  • And after all is said and done, do you have faith in God that whatever outcome that you would recognize His will?

Unit 9: Day 2 - 2 Ne 33

Within these concluding chapters of Nephi, I've learned to appreciate him even more.  I especially enjoy in v3-7, when he would pray for his people, even until he cries at night.  He has such faith, to know the Savior will persuade his people (Nephi people) to do good and to believe in Him, even endure to life eternal.  Nephi would glory in plainness.  For the truth is plain, it is Satan that confuses.  And finally for Nephi's charity that he has for his people so that they can be one with Christ.   Nonetheless, Nephi also sternly warns those of us who chose not to follow these words (i.e. words of Christ, even this Book of Mormon), that these words will condemn us at the last day.  How terrible must that feel?  Nephi speak of the last day as a very happy event for those who follows and endures to the end but it is also at the very same setting at the judgement bar that we would be held accountable.  I don't know about you but tha...

DM Daily Review

Okay gang, this is your first blog seminary lesson and it is going to be on doctrinal mastery. The 5 scriptures that we ought to focus on are listed below. 1 Ne 3:7 2 Ne 28:30 2 Ne 32:3 Mosiah 4:9 2 Ne 32:8-9 Here is a trick that my seminary teacher taught me in working with scripture mastery and I would like you guys to do the same as your first blog seminary assignment (remember, you must comment below otherwise I can't give you seminary credit!).  Read the particular scripture mastery Mark it On the side margins, write down one key word or key phrase that you feel like describes the general idea of the scripture mastery As you do so, you will find that the scripture you mark can become a powerful tool, especially when you are on your mission in quickly searching for thoughts.  Remember how the Holy Ghost teaches by helping you remember things?  Well these keywords in the margins will come in handy when you need them the most.   Sec...

Blog Preface

Let's be honest.  When I first heard that seminary is going to be canceled temporarily, my first thought was I get to sleep in tomorrow (yay).  Second thought was my students will get to sleep in (imagine my students saying yay).  But my third thought was, COVID-19 is Laban . . . and here is why. Earlier in the seminary year we learned about Nephi and his brothers returning to Jerusalem to retrieve the brass plates.  I really should give Laman/Lemuel some credit for trying.  After all they did go ask but fail.  And then returned with gold to try to buy the plates off of Laban and failed again.  Asking and purchasing seems like the obvious and straight forward thing to do and they did do that.  But what sets Nephi apart amongst the brothers is that Nephi does not quit!  He said "and it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for...
